Specialised dental care

The departments at the Institute for Postgraduate Dental Education in Jönköping, Sweden, treat patients that have been referred from dentists, doctors, and other health care providers. Each year, approximately 14,000 patients complete their treatment and the number of patient visits can total as many as 50,000.

Patients are referred to the Institute for Postgraduate Dental Education because of complicated oral health treatment needs that demand analysis, treatment planning, and treatment in the realm of specialised dental health care. Contributions from different dental specialists are often required for the treatment result to be good. This can be offered the patients who are treated at the Institute for Postgraduate Dental Education by a close co-operation between the different departments in specialised dental health care and the medical departments at the County Hospital Ryhov.

An important duty of the specialist dentists is to act as consultants to general dental practitioners. Together, specialists and general dental practitioners plan and carry out complicated treatments. The different specialist clinics are also responsible for telephone consultations and providing advice to support the general dental practitioner's clinical work.
