Postgraduate dental education (PDE)

At the Institute for Postgraduate Dental Education, specialised training of dentists (dentists undergoing postgraduate dental education) in the areas of dentomaxillofacial radiology, endodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orofacial medicine, orthodontics, paediatric dentistry, periodontology, prosthetic dentistry, and stomatognathic physiology is carried out.

The Institute for Postgraduate Dental Education is approved by the National Board of Health and Welfare to educate specialists in eight specialities and the education plan follows the SOSFS 1993:4 guidelines. This means that all chairmen of the clinics must not only be licensed specialists but also in – in principle – have presented a doctoral thesis. The Institute currently has 12 permanent training positions. The education, which is programmed, comprises 3–4 years and is a full-time occupation. Up to September 2017, 194 specialists have graduated. They are now working throughout Sweden and also abroad.

To be accepted as a postgraduate student, the applicant must have a dental licence and at least 2 years of experience as a general dentist. Knowledge of the Swedish language is compulsory. The education is based on an integration of clinical work and theory and is supervised. The supervisors are specialists with documented clinical, pedagogic, and scientific experience. A comprehensive library is available.

The weekly schedule in each department contains theoretical and clinical seminars and clinical activities under supervision. Supplementary education of importance for each specialty is arranged both internally and externally. Dentists undergoing postgraduate dental education are to participate in scientific projects, present clinical cases, and assist in teaching. An examination is conducted with the assistance of an external examiner.
