Department of Paediatric Dentistry

At the department of Paediatric Dentistry children and adolescents (0–19 years) are treated, having been referred to the department from dentists, physicians and different institutions.

Among the patients you will find children and adolescents with complicated traumatic injuries of the teeth, severe oral health diseases, such as caries and gingivitis, severe developmental disturbances of teeth and tooth eruption, and children with severe somatic diseases, handicaps, anxiety and psychiatric disturbances.

Over the years the department has developed an extensive co-operation with the departments of child medicine, child psychiatry, habilitation and also different departments of specialized odontology.

Every year the department receives almost 800 new referrals besides treating revision patients, mostly those with severe handicaps or chronic diseases with effect on oral health and dental care.

The personnel at the department has a wide experience and training concerning psychological management, sedation and pain control and also preventive dental care, which all are corner-stones in the patient care of the department.

An extensive training of the dental team, especially specialist training of dentists, is run at the department. In this context the course in Pain-control and nitrous oxide-oxygen sedation and the training of the so called Resource teams in Paediatric Dentistry are important parts of the educational programme at the department. There are two full-time postgraduate trainee positions at the department.

In 2001 our paediatric dentistry education was the first in Europe that was certified by the European Academy of Paediatric Dentistry.

The research at the department concerns epidemiology, treatment methods, restorative materials, pain control and prevention. A large number of scientific papers and chapters in textbooks etc. have been published at the department.

Besides in Jönköping, the department of Paediatric Dentistry has a clinical unit also in Värnamo, 75 km southward. For the present, a paediatric dentist is on duty there one day every month while a dental hygienist works there two days a week.
