Department of Periodontology

The specialised dental care at the Department of Periodontology involves:

Diagnosis and treatment planning

  • Treatment of patients with periodontitis of different severity
  • Treatment/reconstruction of local periodontal defects with regenerative surgery or periodontal plastic surgery
  • Implant treatment in partially edentulous patients: installation of implants
  • Diagnosis and treatment of mucocutaneous disorders
  • Specialised dental care for patients with severe problems and complicated treatments is carried out in collaboration between different departments at the Institute.
  • Contact with the County Hospital Ryhov's different departments is well established.

Specialists from our department also visit general practitioners as consultants and carry out treatment plans.

Postgraduate specialist training

The department is authorized by the National Board of Health and Welfare for specialist training in periodontology for three dentists. Thirtyfive dentists have become certified specialists in periodontology at the department.

The post graduate training programme in periodontology taught at the Department of Periodontology fulfils the requirements established by the European Federation of Periodontology, EFP, www.efp.net, and has acknowledgement as an official EFP-programme.

Research

There are eighteen research projects ongoing at the department. The research is directed towards augmentation of bone (dissertation work in collaboration with the Department of Biomaterials / Handicap Research, Institute of Surgical Sciences, Göteborg University), periodontal regeneration with barrier technique and bovine substitute (multicenter study), periodontal conditions in twins (in collaboration with the Institute of Gerontology, University Collage of Health Sciences Jönköping and the Pennsylvania State University, USA) and complement factors in periodontitis (in collaboration with the Institute for Clinical Immunology, Lund University).

Publications

Six doctoral theses, one thesis for the licentiate degree, 65 original articles and two textbooks have been produced at the department.
