Endodontics

The Department of Endodontics was established in 2005. Administratively, it is a part of the Department of Periodontology with which it shares several organisational features. One senior consultant and one dental assistant constitute the staff.

The clinic
The clinic is restricted to endodontics and patients are admitted by referrals only. Common cases are technical problems like non-negotiable root canals or therapy resistant apical periodontitis or other post-treatment complaints. Both orthograde and retrograde endodontic treatments are carried out frequently.

In most treatments considered, the operator is assisted by a surgical microscope, a most helpful aid in exploring the root canal system. In cases with therapy resistant apical periodontitis, diagnostics are often supplemented with microbial sampling in order to find a remedy for the post-treatment infection.

Patients with oro-facial pain are examined with respect to possible endodontic origin. Frequently, specialists in Dentomaxillofacial Radiology and Stomatognathic Physiology are consulted.

Research
In collaboration with the Institute of Odontology at the University of Gothenburg and School of Health Sciences at the University of Jönköping, research is conducted with focus on epidemiological aspects on apical periodontitis.

Education
The department takes part in the postgraduate education and offers courses, lectures and hands-on training, for general practitioners.
