Research and Development

The Institute for Postgraduate Dental Education pursues comprehensive research and development activities. The Institute's network of contacts and clinical teamwork with specialist clinics in odontology, general practising dentists, and other medical specialities create unique opportunities to direct research and development in clinical issues. An important goal is to develop practical clinical applications in areas of oral health care that have been prioritised politically and in dental areas of importance.

The research conducted at the Institute has put Jönköping on the dental map both nationally and internationally. One of the research activities that has attracted considerable attention is the so-called Jönköping Studies from 1973, 1978, 1983, 1993, 2003, and 2013. These are epidemiological surveys of the state of oral health in the age groups 3–80 years. The Jönköping investigations have made it possible, in oral health care terms, to evaluate the effect of current dental care strategies; they have also generated a solid foundation for future planning. The comprehensive material has resulted in a number of doctoral theses.

The spectrum of research activities covers such widely different areas as preventive measures, risk group identification, method and technique development, experimental research, and the evaluation of treatment methods. Another vital area of development is how dental and medical specialist expertise, in complicated cases, can best be utilised to provide optimal treatment that takes into account the whole of the patient. Work in developing this concept can best be exemplified by the nine consensus conferences the Institute for Postgraduate Dental Education has conducted and the formation of a national oral disability centre for rare disorders.

During the years 1972 – December 2018, about 725 scientific publications, 37 doctoral theses, 2 theses for the licentiate degree, and 9 consensus reports have originated from the Institute for Postgraduate Dental Education. A large number of textbooks, textbook chapters, and review articles in different areas of dentistry have also had their source in the Institute.
