Hospital Dentistry - Oral Medicine

Hospital Dentistry – Oral Medicine

The primary task of Hospital Dentistry – Oral Medicine is to be a dental resource for residential patients and out-patients at the Ryhov County Hospital. This requires close collaboration with different medical and dental specialties.

Dentists and doctors who work in out-patient care refer patients to the Department when the special knowledge that hospital dentists have on sickness and handicaps would be of help. We are also specialised to diagnose and treat patients with different deseases of the oral mucosa which can give rise to a smarting and burning sensation in the mouth.

Examples of the patient groups treated in the Department:

  • Residential patients with acute pain or discomfort
  • Patients receiving radiotherapy in the head and neck region
  • Patients being treated with cytotoxic drugs
  • Patients about to undergo an organ transplant
  • Patients with a suspected infection localised in the oral cavity
  • Patients with other illnesses or on medicines that can entail local or general impairment of the immune defence
  • Patients with burning sensations in the mouth and different types of changes in the oral mucosa
  • Patients with dental fear
  • Patients with different physical or mental handicaps

The resources of the Department allow treatment to be performed with the help of nitrous oxide anaesthesia, intravenous sedation, and intubation anaesthesia.

Training and education

Hospital Dentistry participates in undergraduate training and in the further education of dental personnel. In addition, hospital staff routinely undergo on-the-job training. The department is also involved in the meetings of patient organisations and relatives of patients.
